Question:

Reworking our front steps--who to contact?

We have about 30 steep steps to get into our front door, and we're thinking of having them torn out and reworked so that they're less steep with a landing halfway down. What sort of person do I need to contact about this? At first I was thinking of a masonry person, but I'm not sure if they can design and provide plans, or if they just do the labor only. So do I need to contact some sort of designer and, if so, what kind? Thanks!

  1. You can go right to a home depot and have them price it out and see what it involves.  Then take the design to a few local people and see if they can beat it.  I would feel bad but home depot has sold me so much junk that's broken a year later- use them for something good!

Finding someone who will do it on the side- as extra work will be the best cheapest way of getting it done.

  2. A masonry person, or someone who works with metal steps would be appropriate.

Or, if you are very rich, you want to spend a fortune, and you want every single thing on your property fixed up, just call Mike Holmes. He'll fix the steps, and the drainage, and he'll make the whole yard look better!

  3. I surmise from your question that the steep steps you are referring to are on a slope of earth leading from a sidewalk or street level up to the front of your home -- not a steep one flight wooden stairway up to a second story level door.

If your existing stairway is concrete laid on earth, I should think that a well-recommended concrete contractor or, if you wish, a brickmason contractor could reshape your stairway to have fewer steep steps with level plateaus in between. Short handrails along side of the steep steps would be a nice addition (and of course, more expensive).
