Rexy Mainaky hopes for Tan Boon Heong-Koo Kien Keat to deliver in World Championships
Malaysia’s coach for doubles, Rexy Mainaky is optimistic for the national top seeds Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat to perform well in the 2011 World Championships, which will start on August 8, at London.
The coach is also hopeful that World Number Four Tan Boon – Koo Kien will meet China’s tops seeds and World Number 1, Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng in the final, which will be a rematch between these two pairs; they met in the final of the 2010 World Championships
and the Chinese emerged as the winners back then.
Rexy said, “The situation is the same like last year. They never won anything during the GP and Super Series, but they did well during the World Championship. It’s like they have been gearing up for this.”
The coach is confident that this time the Malaysian pair is better prepared and the current training camp at the University of Bath will also bear fruit in the mega event.
The coach said, “However, we are not going to be over-confident about it (reaching the final). Me as the coach, not just Koo and Tan, have learnt from the past that it is better to keep a low profile.”
Tan Boon – Koo Kien have got an opening round bye and the duo is set to meet China’s Qiu Zihan and Liu Xiaolong in the Men’s Doubles second round.
While talking about their first match in the championship against the Chinese pair, Rexy said, “They have never met this pair before and they have to be careful with them. This pair might have been taught by their friends on how to face them.”
However, the Malaysian pair is expected to win their match against the Chinese duo. They are expected to fight against Korea’s Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hyun in the Men’s Double quarter-final of the mega event.
Rexy said that the quarter-final fight will be challenging but he has confidence in Tan Boon – Koo Kien that they will win the battle by playing better badminton. He hopes that the Malaysian pair will reach in the final and will fight and win against the
Chinese duo of Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng.
