Rexy Mainaky hoping Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra can achieve good results in Thailand Open GP Gold
Malaysia’s Doubles head coach, Rexy Mainaky, seemed pretty optimistic abiout the prospects of Men’s Doubles shuttlers, Mohd Lutfi Zaim Abdul Khalid and Vountus Indra Mawan, in the upcoming event of Thailand Open GP Gold 2011, starting from tomorrow in Thailand,
on June 7.
Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra will appear in the Thailand Open as qualifiers. They will play two matches in the Men’s Doubles qualifying round, before facing Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae of Korea in the first round of the draw.
The Koreans, who are currently ranked at number two in the Men’s Doubles world rankings, will be the top seeds in the Thailand Open.
Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra have been producing good results for the last few months. They defeated the ruling Olympic Champions, Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido of Indonesia, in last month’s Malaysia Open GP Gold.
The young pair is learning a lot from the senior teammates including, Tan Boon Heong – Koo Kien Keat, Ong Soon Hock – Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif – Hoon Thien How.
While talking about the performance of Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra in the championship, Rexy said, “Their first challenge is to clear the qualifying rounds. The draw however, is unkind to them. If they make it, they will take on the formidable Koreans.”
He further added, “The odds are stacked against them but I hope that they can give the Koreans a run for their money. They should not be intimidated by Yong-dae-Jae-sung.”
The other Malaysian pairs in the elite squad, who will join forces with Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra, will be Lim Khim Wah – Goh Wei Shem, Lee Wan Wah – Chan Chong Ming, Tan Wee Kiong – Chan Peng Soon and Mak Hee Chun – Yew Hong Kheng.
The Thailand Open will serve as a testing ground for Mohd Lutfi and Vountus Indra, who will gain experience of handling the pressure by playing against the top shuttlers in the world of badminton.
