Rexy Mainaky says he did not drop Tan Shen and Gan Teik from 2011 World Badminton Championships
Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles national coach, Rexy Mainaky, has made his position clear on the issue of dropping the Men’s Doubles pair of Tan Bin Shen and Gan Teik Chai, from the national team for the 2011 World Badminton Championships.
The tournament will be held in England from August 8 to 14.
Rexy asserted that many people are blaming him for the decision, which was in actual taken by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and he was merely informed about it. He added that he was only asked for the next best pair to Bin Shen and Gan Teik,
to which he honestly responded by recommending the names of the World Number 27 pair of Hoon Thien How and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif. The duo is the best option apart from the top seeds, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, in the national squad.
BAM secretary and the Chairman of Training and Coaching Committee, Ng Chin Chai had announced the shocking news of the non-participation of Bin Shen and Gan Teik in the World Championships.
The pair, which is currently ranked at World Number 17, gave a strong reaction after they were informed about the decision.
Rexy said that the coaches are not responsible for the verdict of dropping Teik Chai and Bin Shen, as the duo was not under their charge.
He also added, “The BAM had already decided and we were merely asked to find the replacements. Of course I named Zakry-Teik Chai when asked who were the next best pair to go based on current form and results. They had beaten several higher ranked pairs.
And my comparison was only based on the players under my care.”
The coach said that he wanted to clear his position before leaving for the Sudirman Cup, which will take place in Qingdao, China, from May 22. He wants people not to blame him for the decision, which he said he had no involvement in.
Rexy further added that he is performing his duties in the domain of coaching, while the selection of the team is not the responsibility of coaches.
