Hi! I am doing research on the rhinovirus infection for a project for a scholarship to help put me through college. I know very very little about it now, so any basic info you could give me on it would be very helpful!!

I am wondering if there is there a proven treatment for it yet?

Thank you dearly!

  1. If you don't treat it, it lasts a week.  If you do, it only lasts 7 days.

Over 200 different cold viruses.  Have you had enough colds to know them by taste, smell, and other individual symptoms?

I've read that Zantac (or some such), something you swab the inside of your nose with at the first sign of a cold, will actually reduce length and severity of the infection.  That's perhaps the only progress there's been in 50 years, other than the wide selection of symptom treatments like Contac, Nyquil, Pseudefed, and all those.

  2. There is no proven treatment, scientifically speaking.  It is a virus, and needs to run it's course.  You can only treat symptoms.  Interesting facts, however.  It is one of the most virulent viruses there is.  The LD50 value is 1, meaning it only takes 1 virus for infection. (Anthrax is like 100,000).  Also, the most common form of transmission is through the eye, contrary to popular opinion that it is transmitted respiratorially.

Edit:  I wish Y!A would stop telling me I'm using a lot of punctuation.  lol.
