Question:

Rhyme or reason to breathing methods?

Is there any reason why breathing in through one's nose and out through the mouth is recommended for running? I am a runner myself, and this technique certainly works as opposed to the in and out through the mouth method, but im just really curious.

  1. It really comes down to whatever works best for you. Personally, I find that on a long run, I take 2 short breathes in, then one long breathe out, which helps me keep my rhythm for some unknown reason.

  2. Hi runner!

Actually, i just breath in and out from my mouth. I've tried to do that fancy breathing method, but it was too much to concentrate on. I'm too adapted to my own breathing ways. Hope this helped! peace

  3. I doubt that most people can breath in their nose if they are running very fast.

I have heard lots of reasons as to why it is better to breath in your nose, but the air gets to your lungs the same regardless of whether it is by the nose or mouth.

What is important is to take in the air you need and take deep, full breaths, don't gasp or pant.

If you take short shallow breaths you are not getting a full exchange.
