Rhyne Williams knocks out Bobby Reynolds in USTA Australian Open wildcard playoffs – Tennis News
University of Tennessee’s former showstopper, Rhyne Williams flabbergasted top seeded Bobby Reynolds in the opening round match of the USTA Australian Open wildcard playoffs. It was another disappointing shocking end to a dream
of qualifying for the main round of Australian Open 2012 starting from January 16.
Williams defeated the top seed and moved into the next round in style. He started off the match in great fashion but couldn’t hold on to the first set. Trailing one set down, American pulled up his socks and returned to the centre
of the court with only one thing in his mind and that was to outdone the top seed in all aspects of the game. He defeated Reynolds with a cumulative score of 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 and inched one step close in placing a berth at the first round of Australian Open.
Talking about his triumph over the top seed, he said, “Finally, back and forth, fifth match point; it was a crazy rally. I was just praying one of those passing shots would be a winner, and luckily, I hit it in the right spot and
he guessed wrong."
Williams was not efficient in converting the breaks to his favour and lost the first set plus the first game on his serve in the second set that placed a lot of pressure on him. The aggressive nature of the player was not seen
at the court on Friday December 16th; he kept his cool and finally managed to grab something that will surely make him feel much relieved.
Talking about his game, Williams further added, “I’d still get mad out there, but the biggest thing is coming back and playing the next point as hard as you can and not letting it affect you for a couple points in a row," Williams
said. "I think I did a pretty good job of that. I got frustrated but I did a decent job of bouncing back and playing the next point hard."
Williams was clearly angry at the fact that he double-faulted thrice in the game and it was completely unacceptable for him because he is re-known for his control over serves and rarely double-faulted. This victory ensures a semi-final
berth for Williams and he lock horns with the fourth seeded star performer, Robby Ginepri on Saturday December 17th.
