Rhys Davies hoping to play in the 2012 Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is scheduled to tee off tomorrow at Celtic Manor in Wales. Rhys Davies, who is a Welsh golfer, hopes to be on the next Ryder team. In order to make his profile seem appealing to the current Ryder captain, Davies is thinking of assisting Colin
Montgomerie so he can make it to the Ryder Cup in 2012.
The Ryder Cup in 2012 will take place in Medinah in United States.
Looking at the enthusiasm of the player, Colin awarded him a backroom role. The captain thinks that the 25-year old is a ‘Ryder Cup player of the future’.  The young golfer almost made it to the team this year.
Being the Ryder fanatic he is, Davies is definitely not giving up and hopes that watching the Cup will force him to qualify for the next European team.  He was the only Welsh, who was very close to qualifying for the team.
Rhys finished 15th in the qualifying places in his Rookie year. That is some achievement for the young star. Monty wants him to gain some insight on the Ryder experience and hence has him in the backroom team.
Rhys has become the course record holder on the Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten course after he had a 62 and finished second at this year’s Wales Open. He came second to Graeme McDowell, who is playing for the European Ryder Cup team this year.
The same fate has met McDowell, who almost made it to the 2006 Ryder team at the K club. However, when the Irishman saw Woosnam’s men crush the Americans, it motivated him so much that he made his Ryder debut in 2008.
The agony was also experienced by Martin Kaymer, who didn’t qualify for the 2008 team, and he commenced the task similar to Rhys’s at Valhalla. Being an annoyed observer in the 2008 cup, Kaymer struggled to make his way to Celtic Manor. After winning the
US PGA Championship, Kaymer, who is now number six in the golf World rankings is making his Ryder debut this year. Rhys Davies really hopes to follow the lead of McDowell and Kaymer into the European side.
"Hopefully this week will be a glimpse into the future for me", said Davies. "Ryder Cups are so huge and such an emotional rollercoaster, Colin wants me to gain a bit of experience so I know what to expect if I qualify to play in future years”.
Davies has always dreamt of playing the Ryder Cup and he does accept that it can get frustrating at times. He’s feeling good now that someone like Colin Montgomerie with such a remarkable profile considers Rhys worthy to be a Ryder Cup player.
Monty has played in eight European Ryder teams and he has won five. Colin has never been defeated in singles match and is only 1.5 points behind record holder Nick Faldo.
With the Cup being held in Wales this year, Davies is the only Welsh in the team. The 2006 triumphant skipper, Ian Woosnam refused to be in the backroom team whereas the 2002 Cup star Phil Price was ignored as well.
Davies felt honoured to be the thirteenth man and to be invited by the Captain. Even though he will just be a buggy driver, it’s the experience he truly cares about. He said he would like to think that he earned this role and considers it a reward.
Rhys Davis had a victory in his first season on the European Tour at the Hassan III Championship in Morocco in March. The Welshman also had five more top six finishes, which includes his second place at the Wales Open.
Having lowered the course record, Davies said that he could advise the Ryder players but then again they are the best in the world and they know what they are doing.
Overall, Rhys Davies even though not entirely in the team is very excited for the Cup to start tomorrow. He will learn all he can from this week and hopes to use it in qualifying for the 2012 Ryder Cup.
