Rhys Davies still unsure of the causes behind his overwhelming success in Morocco
Welshman Rhys Davies is not ready to let go of his bid in this week’s Trophy Hassan II in Morocco and hopes to repeat history by landing the title for a second time.
Davies will be returning to his favourite hunting ground, the Golf du Palais Royal of the Royal Palace of Agadir and although this is not exactly the same venue where he won his maiden European Tour title, he is well aware that Morocco in general, happens
to the lucky tourney for him.
Davies won his first European Tour title, the Trophy Hassan II in 2010, playing the scenic Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat and posted another runner up in last year’s event played in Agadir.
He said, “I obviously won in Rabat at a different venue but then came very close here last year and it is always nice to come back to a place where you have been in contention. I had four good rounds in India a few weeks ago and that is still fresh in the
memory”.
Davies has experienced overwhelming success in the North African country and appears to be in shadows about the real reasons why he has been such a blazing success in the sub-Saharan country.
He added, “I wish I knew what it is that makes me play so well in Morocco but it is not an obvious answer. If I knew then I would definitely play well but the two courses that I have played here have been fantastic and I just love the characteristics of
both”.
Davies has been part of the European Tour circuit since the year 2010 and landed a title in the debut year. He turned professional in the year 2007 and went over to win his tour card via the Challenge Tour events in the previous year.
The 26-year-old Edinburgh native also spoke of the friendly people and the exquisite places in the country and exclaimed that he is in awe to be back at the Royal Palace again which is a matter of honour and privilege for him.
The tournament will kick off today with a heavy contingent of European Tour players of the likes of Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, Major Champions Rich Beem and Michael Campbell, eight-time European Tour Money List winner Colin Montgomerie and Italian teenager
Matteo Manassero.
