Rhys Davies takes control of the second round of the King Hassan II Trophy – Golf update
The defending champion of the King Hassan II Trophy came out from obscurity to share the lead with Dutch Joost Luiten at the conclusion of the second round of the tournament. Davies carded a 70 for a 6-under as sweeping winds lashed the course, making it
all the more difficult to maintain precision. Davies apparently seemed more relaxed playing on the par-71 Golf de L’Océan, however the other par-72 Golf Du Palais Royal will be used for the next two rounds of the tournament including the final.
"I'm not feeling any pressure despite being defending champion this week," said the Welshman. "It's a different golf course for one and I just feel very relaxed. I'm enjoying the pro-am format and I had a great partner today, Mazamischi Ito. He's a great
player and has a great future ahead of him in golf,” he added. Davies also said that he had been working on his swing with his coach trying to blend in the body momentum with that of the swing, something which is now yielding results.
Dutchman Luiten, although visibly stymied with the high winds, was able to pull in seven birdies but stumbled with two bogeys to eventually share the lead with Davies for 2-under 69. "I was good on the back nine with four birdies so that kept me going,"
he said.
Some nine players are tied for the third place at the end of the second round with only one shot behind. Mikko Ilonen carded eight birdies to end the session for a brilliant 64. Peter Lawrie, who was leading the first round with a 64, slumped down the leader
board with a disappointing 76. Last week’s Sicilian Open winner Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin also closed the day with a 77.
The event takes place every year at Agadir, Morocco along with the ladies European Tour being played at scenic Soleil Golf Course, both ending for a combined prize distribution ceremony attended by His Royal Highness prince Moulay Rachid. The tournament
will continue into the weekend with the final round and prize distribution ceremony scheduled on Sunday.
