Rian Agung Saputra and Angga Pratama surge into quarter-final of Indonesia Open Premier Super Series
Indonesia’s emerging Men’s Doubles pair of Rian Agung Saputra and Angga Pratama stunned World Number Three Korean duo of Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung in the second round of the Indonesia Open Premier Super series 2011, held in Jakarta, on Thursday, June
23, 2011.
The young duo of Agung Saputra and Angga delivered a stunning performance in the Premier Super Series event against the second seed Korean pair yesterday, in front of a huge crowd at the indoor stadium in Jakarta. The Indonesians thrashed the higher ranked
and experienced Koreans in straight games with a 21-17 and 21-17 margin.
The World Number 35 Indonesian pair participated in the Indonesia Open as qualifiers and progressed in the event by playing high-quality badminton against all their opponents to book a place in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final.
After winning the match, Agung Saputra said, “Today we played good. Tomorrow we must play better. We will stay focused and maintain [a positive] mentality and fitness for the next matches.”
He further added, “This year, there are 22 tournaments already listed on our agenda to collect Olympics points.”
While talking about the impressive performance of the Indonesian duo, national coach for Men’s Doubles, Herry IP said, “It is a good thing that Angga and Rian can fully developed their offensive throughout the match just now. I see that the Koreans, especially
Yong-dae , appeared pressured and unable to play their best game.”
The coach further expressed that if the pair continues to replicate their current performances, their goal of participating in the 2012 Olympic Games is not impossible to achieve.
Their performance in the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series will earn them precious ranking points, which will help them in improving their world ranking in the category of Men’s Doubles.
In the quarter-final showdown of this Premier Super Series tournament, the Indonesians will play against China’s Biao Chai and Zhengdong Guo, who proved their worth against Ingo Kindervater and Johannes Schoettler of Germany in the Men’s Doubles second round
of the championship.
