Ricardas Berankis blue rains David Goffin in quarterfinal – Geneva Challenger 2011
Eighth seeded Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis outplayed Belgian qualifier David Goffin in the quarterfinal of the Geneva Challenger 2011.
On Friday the 11th of November 2011, the two encountered each other on clay courts of the Drizia-Miremont Tennis Club in Geneva, Switzerland. After one hour and twenty two minutes the eighth seeded Lithuanian got rid of the Belgian qualifier in
straight sets of 6-3, 6-4.
Berankis had taken an assertive style of play from the very beginning and even though Goffin had tried to make a return in the second set, he was unable to bag as many service games and due to a poor return eventually lost both the sets.
First round of the opening set was inaugurated by Berankis and he managed to hold his serve in order to kick open the scoreboard at 1-0. Trailing at his heels was Goffin and he too held his serve to place himself on the scoreboard at 1-1. In the following
two games the players traded in breaks and once again the score tied at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game.
However, in the fifth game Berankis held his serve and then capitalized on a breakpoint to reel of straight two games against his adversary and took a mini lead of 4-2 at the end of the sixth game. In the following two games the players held their respective
serves and the score had shifted to 5-3 at the end of the eighth game. As Berankis held his serve for the last time in the ninth game, he smashed a backhand winner to secure the opening set.
Opening the second set of the match was Goffin and this time he squandered two successive games by capitalizing on a break point in the second game to place himself on the scoreboard with a mini lead of 2-0. However, Berankis was quick to break back immediately
in the following game and with a hold of serve managed to mitigate the deficit completely at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game.
Subsequently, in the following four games the players bagged two service games each and the score balanced out at four games each at the end of the eighth game. However in the last two games Berankis struck a pot of gold as he managed to capitalize on a
crucial break in the ninth game and then as he held his serve for the last time, he smashed a stunning forehand winner and sealed his victory of the match.
Berankis will now be facing German qualifier Mischa Zverev in the semi final of the event.
