Ricardas Berankis makes it to round two; ousts Adrian Ungur – Slovak Open 2011
Ricardas Berankis, Lithuanian world No.108, swept away the first round of Slovak Open 2011 defeating world No.115 and Romanian, Adrian Ungur in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, in an hour and 20 minutes hard indoor circuit match to
make his wayto the second stage of the event.
Although the two had less difference in ranking, however, Lithuanian pulled his way with a better performance. Anyhow, the two made their way to the blue court with a handful of spectators there to watch the match.
Kicking off with the fixture, Romanian world No.115 ignited the opener and nearly lost the game, however, managed to pull off with a winner, 1-0. Serving next, Berankis took out his first service game to even up the scores at 1-1
and switched the serve back to the lower ranked Romanian.
Rallying down games, the two levelled up at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 and then on 5-5. Unable to break each other all along, the two ended up playing twelve games and into a tiebreaker, 6-6. Playing for the winner, Ungur started off with
the tiebreaker, however, slipped at 5-5 losing the next two points and lost the tiebreaker, 7-5, and the opening set, 7-6(5), to lead the match, 1-0.
With the first set slipping away from the Romanian, Berankis snatched away the second with a similar beating. Outdoing the lower ranked in the opening serve with a triple game point winner, Lithuanian slowly built his tempo, and
however, Ungur in the start tailed the higher ranked 21-year-old.
Winning a game each next, the two levelled up at 2-2 before Berankis took his shot. Serving out game five, 3-2, the 21-year-old Lithuanian broke his rival to lead the fixture 4-2. Serving in game seven, world No.108 mustered away
his third consecutive winner to lead the set, 5-2. With just one more game left to finish off the set and the match, Berankis stormed away with game nine, 6-3, to conclude the set and the match with straight set win.
The major advantage to the 21-year-old was that he had been playing most of his matches on hard court, and has considerably improved in this season. Winning seven out of his last ten matches, world No.108 has proved his self as
one of the best emerging players.
Nevertheless, winning his way into the second stage of the ATP Challenger tour, the Lithuanian world No.108 will now go on against Stephane Robert, Frenchman as the two battle for the quarter-final seat of Slovak Open 2011.
