Ricardas Berankis trounces Igor Andreev to reach quarters – Farmers Classic 2012
Lithuanian qualifier, Ricardas Berankis, outclassed the Russian star, Igor Andreev, in straight sets at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 6-4, 7-5 victory against the Russian veteran to book a spot in the quarter-finals at this Emirates
Airline US Open series event taking place in Los Angeles, California.
Berankis got the better of the world number 89 after displaying awe-inspiring skills at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event. After earning the limelight in one hour and 15 minutes, the Lithuanian not only took lead
in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against the 29-year-old but also progressed into the final eight.
The 22-year-old entered the Los Angeles Tennis Center in high spirits. He drew the first blood in the sixth game and took a 4-2 lead. Despite squandering his edge in the very next game, Berankis got the breakthrough in the last game and pocketed the opener
with a 6-4 win. He cashed in both break chances and blocked two out of three breakpoints he faced.
Ranked 141st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Berankis carried his rhythm in the following set. He dominated his entire service games after dusting away both breakpoints he encountered. The Lithuanian cashed in the lone break
chance in the last game and clinched the set with a 7-5 score line.
All in all, the Lithuanian manifested a lower first serve share of 52 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 66 per cent but amazingly marked 25 out of 34 points on it. He also hammered three aces and finished the match with 68 points.
Next challenge for Berankis is fourth seeded Nicolas Mahut who tumbled the Italian contender, Paolo Lorenzi, in straight sets to set up this meeting.
The sixth seed, Marinko Matosevic, will accompany Berankis in the last eight. He overpowered Germany’s Tobias Kamke in a see-saw three setter to advance at this outdoor hard court event. The Aussie was broken three times but he capitalised on five out of
eight break chances, eventually sealing the victory with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 score line.
