Ricardas Berankis tumbles Marcel Felder to enter main draw – Farmers Classic 2012
Fifth seed, Ricardas Berankis, took down the Uruguayan contender, Marcel Felder, in straight sets in the qualifying competition of Farmers Classic 2012 on Monday. He recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the 28-year-old to secure a spot in the main draw at
this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event held in Los Angeles, United States.
The Lithuanian star displayed brilliant tennis skills to outmuscle Felder in their first duel against each other. After stealing the spotlight in almost an hour-long venture, Berankis assertively secure a main draw place at this Emirates Airline US Open
series event taking place from 23rd to 29th July.
Berankis made a powerful entry at the Los Angeles Tennis Center and earned the desiderated break in the third game to go 3-1 l-up. He maintained his intensity and not only held his remaining serves but capitalised on another break chance in the seventh game,
eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
Ranked 141st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Berankis kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set and got the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Apart from losing his track after that and going 1-3
down, the Lithuanian remained focused. He changed his strategy after that and went on a five-game tear, eventually sealing the set with a 6-3 win.
Overall, Berankis spilled two double faults but smacked seven aces to dominate. He manipulated a lower first serve share of 55 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 68 per cent but impressively clinched 23 out of 29 points on it. The Lithuanian found 14
break opportunities out of which he availed six to pocket the match.
Berankis will face off seventh seeded Bjorn Phau in the opening round.
The Australian contestant, Chris Guccione, will accompany the Lithuanian in the opening round. He fired 10 aces and cashed in three out of six break chances to manipulate a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Ireland’s Louk Sorensen. The Aussie clobbered a better first
serve share of 57 per cent and brilliantly clicked 20 out of 25 points on it.
