Ricardo Santos wins the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal
Ricardo Santos won the title of the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal, after he shot a 63 on Sunday, the best score of the tournament.
The Portuguese professional golfer amazed the spectators, his fans and all the other golfers by hitting a 9-under 63 in the final round.
He was the most appealing player of the field, as he increased the value of the tournament for recording the unbeatable scores of a 22-under 266, at the Santo da Serra in Madeira, Portugal.
“I don’t have the words to describe this week as it is very emotional,” he said. “To win my first European Tour event in my own country is very special. It was a sensational round and definitely the best of my career”.
He added: "It was a sensational round, definitely the best of my career. It was amazing to have the crowds here supporting me and it would be difficult to imagine a better win than this".
Santos only carded three bogeys in the tournament. He shot 23 total birdies and also scored an eagle in the third round in Portugal.
He displayed an amazing performance in the final round, as he was bogey-free throughout the day and scored nine massive birdies in total.
The crowd supported their professional player and the golf course was surrounded by his fans as well. Santos was very happy at the end of the day, as he received a huge round of applause from the viewers.
“It was amazing to have the crowds here supporting me,” he said. “It would be difficult to imagine a better win than this”.
He successfully defeated Magnus A Carlsson by four strokes lead. Carlsson scored an 18-under 270 and finished on the runner-up position at the end of the day.
Santos shot 68, 67, 68 and 63 in the four-day tournament. He recorded his first European Tour win and second Challenge Tour win, as the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal is a co-sanctioned event of both the tours.
The Vilamoura native achieved many honours and respect after recording the first win in his homeland. He has also improved his world ranking position and is now confident to lead at the upcoming European Tour events.
