Riccar Model 606 - will not pull up bobbin thread

Inherited the sewing machine from my mother. Threaded both machine and bobbin case according to the instructions ( unless I'm a total idiot) and it will not pull up the bobbin thread. Ready to throw the @$%&^ thing out! Any suggestions? Model 606
