Riccardo Ghedin guns down Ivan Endara to qualify for the semi-finals – Manta Open 2011 CH
World number 321, Riccardo Ghedin of Italy prevailed over world No.554, Ivan Endara of Ecuador in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Manta Open on Thursday. The Italian won an evenly contested match in one
hour and fourteen minutes of play to reach the semi-finals of the tournament, being played here at Manta, Ecuador.
Endara was not a big challenge for Italian as he completely dominated him with impressive serving and good ground strokes. With a big serve and well placed shots Ghedin proved to be a tough opponent for the Ecuadorian. He was solid
on serve and played with his usual power on the ground while Endara kept struggling on the second serve and failed to return well too.
The first set saw some brilliant serving from both men, however, Ghedin seemed to be struggling at the net, allowing his opponent to grab some early points.  Both men continued to hold their serve and in no time managed to take
the score at 4-all. However, it was the Italian, who broke first, clinching the opener with six games to four.
Ghedin fired 63 percent of the first serves, winning 75 percent of the points on them. While, Endara stayed behind with a difference of fifteen percent as he delivered 78 percent of the first serves and converted 60 percent of
them into points. Ghedin won 43 percent of his second return points and converted one of the five break points to clinch the first set.
After claiming the first set, Ghedin never looked back and kept his momentum flowing in the next games, clinching the second set with six games to two.
In the second set, Ghedin struck four aces, 67 percent of the first serves, and scored a whopping 100 percent of the points behind them. In comparison, Endara kept his first serve percentage at 69 percent and gained a meager 56
percent behind them. The Ecuadorian failed to save two of the three break points he faced and gifted away the match to his opponent in straight sets.
Ghedin now moves on into the semi-finals of the tournament where he will meet eighth-seeded Facundo Arguello of Argentina in an attempt to reach the final spot.
Argentine’s defensive game is pretty good at forcing errors out of opponents but he needs to come up with something extraordinary if he desires to reach the main spot here at Manta, Ecuador.
