Rice Milk vs. Soy Milk, what is better for my sick 15 month old?

The doctor said no dairy products because he'd been throwing up a little, but I could give him rice milk or soy milk.

I have both at home (vanilla flavored), but which of the two would you recommend and why?

  1. Clear liquids only if his tummy is upset.

  2. The remark of "chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive or gastrointestinal tract that appears to be a result of a complex interaction of factors including: * Inherited genes, * the immune system and * environmental factors" could all start with an intolerance of soy (environmental factor), that the body retaliates with antibodies (immune system), and this causes the cells in the lining of the intestinal tract to die (resulting in genes being killed). It all has to start somewhere.

Thus, rice  is usually not an allergen, but soy could be. I would start with a rice milk, and try different kinds.

  3. soy milk.

    =]

  4. Soymilk all the way. Choose organic soymilk not the chocolate or vanilla or strawberry flavored ones because it might be hard on his stomach.

  5. I would say soy milk. Its heavier with a richer taste.

  6. i say rice milk. i think he will like the flavor better and soy milk is bad for you. my aunt got crownes diesease adn they think soy milk caused it.

  7. I would suggest either soy or rice, they are both nutritionally sound and have the appropriate amount of fat, calories and vitamin D per serving.  My daughter has had some really bad reflux with lactose intolerance.  She drinks soy on the occasion, otherwise she drinks water.  She is 5.

HOWEVER... FYI  Make sure to check the sugar contents in both the soy and rice milks as they are very similar.  The vanilla Silk soy has 11g of sugar per 11oz. serving (comparable to cow's milk) and the Silk Plus Omega-3 DHA has 6g of sugar per serving (which is very good and lower than cow's milk).  However, the chocolate SILK has 26g, that is crazy!  It's like giving them soda.  Just make sure to read the label.

See what he likes and go from there.

  8. I'd ask your doctor this question. Probably rice milk would be the better choice.

  9. Rice milk is easier on the stomach; some children are also allergic to soy. So unless you are positive that he is not allergic, give him rice milk. However, if you do know that he is not allergic, give him soy because it has more nutrients than rice milk.

  10. Soy milk is thicker than rice milk, as it has a little more fat.  It also has a creamier texture than rice milk.

But if you're trying to get calories into him, I would let him try both and give him whichever one he drinks.
