  1. The "rice panic" is largely being fed by the media.

Here's the REAL story:  Harvests of Jasmine and Basmhatti rice have been lower than usual this year.  These speciality rices only come from India and Thailand, unlike the generic short grain rice grown elsewhere around Asia and in California.

As a result, those rice prices have gone up quite a bit - and these are the rices that Costco and Sams Club are restricting to 80lbs per person.  (remember - 80lbs is STILL a LOT OF RICE!)

However, the news channels have blown this out of proportion by saying that ALL rice is in shortage, causing people to stock up even on the Californian grown rice which we have no shortage of at all.

  2. Many people are stockpiling rice and other foods in anticipation of depression or severe recession.  Many people have to choose between eating and driving to work, especiall ythose without access to public transport.  So since people are buying up the rice, and production has slowed, people are starting to panic.

Many people have been stockpiling canned goods and bottled water, vitamin and energy drinks, protein bars and powders in anticipation of the severe recession we are rapidly moving into...which some say could turn into depression.

The govt under Bush is already trying to allay fears to no avail.....

By the way, not only mexicans eat rice...many people eat it every day as a staple food.  Please dont judge or catagorize

  3. What is this bigotry about Mexicans..????

    another ethnic slur..

Rice Is a commodity,, buy wholesale add 300% sell or use..

Every resturaunt owner,, Asian,, Oriental,, Indian,, ETC may have raided Cosco and Sam's club and CNN of course jumped in blur the facts..

We have an entrapurneral market.. do you have $2K to buy a ton of rice at .89¢lb..??
