i have to do a report on rice for school...

i know, sounds weird.

but do you have any interesting facts about rice?

it has to do with Asia too,

because that is the continent that is more known for rice.

anything would help.

  1. One farmer could sell his crop of rice to more than one name brand company, such as Uncle Ben.  Yet, Uncle Ben would profit more than the farmer.

    Medicinal Uses of Rice

    In Cambodia, the hulls (husk) of mature rice plants are considered useful for treating dysentery. The hulls of a three-month old rice plant are thought to be diuretic.

    In China, dried sprouted rice grains were once imported from Malaysia and used as an external medicine to aid in digestion, give tone to muscles, and expel gas from the stomach and intestines.

    The Chinese believe rice strengthens the spleen, as well as "weak stomach," increases appetite, and cures indigestion.

    In India, rice water (a decoction of rice) is prescribed by the Pharmacopoeia of India as an ointment to counteract inflamed surface.

    Across Asia, the rice spirit is nearly always female—and is often thought of as a mother figure. The notable exception, however, is in the Philippines, where the gods are almost all males.

  5. Well, here's something that has been in the news lately. Since countries that grow rice haven't been getting the sufficient amount of rain they need to grow it, the supply is going down, while the demand is still very high. They are not exporting alot of long grain, basmati, and jasmine rice, so now they price here is increasing. Not only that, but wholesale warehouses, such as Costco are rationing their rice..only 1 bag per customer. This is expected to last for the next 8-10 months.
