Rich Peverley proves worth, re-signed to 3-year, $9.75 million by Boston Bruins -NHL News Update
Boston Bruins might have played only three matchups in the new 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, but they were enough to convince them that veteran centre, Rich Peverley, is certainly a keeper and will be valuable for the team in the
long run.
Bruins re-signed the 29-year-old to a three-year extension, worth an estimated $9.75 million, giving him an annual salary of $3.25 million, on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
Team general manager, Peter Chiarelli, made the announcement and regarded his team as one of the most complete with a wide range of players.
"Maybe we waited a little bit longer in signing some guys who are potential UFAs, but he's got speed, a good shot and he's still relatively young in the grander schemes", Chiarelli said about signing on players that have remained UFA. "He's just a guy we
wanted to have in our mix for the next four years. Sometimes there's a fine line between the top six or seven or eight. We always felt he was in that mix before we got him. We liked the way he fit into our group".
Peverley was acquired by the 2011 Stanley Cup winners during the 2010-2011 regular season along with prospectus player, Boris Valabik, in-exchange for defenseman Mark Stuart and forward Blake Wheeler, to the then, Atlanta Thrashers.
His best season came in 2009-2010 when the veteran scored 55 points (22 goals, 33 assists) by playing all 82 games, making him a valuable contributor on any line-up and so far with Boston, he has been doing much more than that.
Last season, the Kingston, Ontario, Canada native, played only 23 games and registered seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) with the Boston club, but thus far this season, Peverley has potted two goals in three matchups.
His veteran presence on the line-up adds to the make Boston Bruins one of the most experience teams in the entire league, but that can also make them in need of more younger players.
If the undrafted player can continue playing like he currently is, Boston can expect another major scorer on their run for another Stanley Cup championship while defending it at the same time.
