Rich Rodriquez will not change Michigan Wolverines coaching staff
Michigan Wolverines head coach Rich Rodriquez has made it clear that he is not willing to replace any members of his defensive staff before the end of the season.
The Wolverines defence has struggled all season, but in recent weeks has looked particularly poor, giving up plenty of points to conference opponents in important games.
Rodriguez has been praised for his offensive prowess, developing a very potent spread offence, which features superstar quarterback Dernard Robinson. Robinson was once considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy this season after Michigan got off to
a torrid pace to start the year.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines have looked subpar over the past three weeks and much of that has to do with a defence that is ranked 89th in the country, averaging 30 points against per game.
“I’m not going to be able to wave a magic wand myself and fix some of the issues,” said Rodriguez. “Some of the problems are not going to get fixed overnight. We have a lot of inexperienced players playing defensively.”
The Wolverines were able to get by early in the season with one of the nation’s best offences. However, as their schedule became more difficult and their conference games began, their lack of skill on the defensive side of the ball caught up with them and
they have now dropped three straight.
Michigan began the year 5-0, but has lost three games in a row to fall to 5-3 with a conference record of 1-3, placing them ninth in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines most recent loss was a 41-31 drubbing at the hands of a 5-3 Penn State Nittany Lions team, which has one of the worst offences in the Big Ten. The loss caused many to call for Rodriguez to replace his defensive staff.
Nevertheless, the Michigan head coach maintains that he will not replace any of his staff members.
The Wolverines will be back in action in week 10 when they face The Illinois Illini on Saturday 6 November.
