Richard Abril: My technical brawling style will silence Brandon Rios once and for all – Boxing News
Richard Abril, the current interim owner of the WBA world lightweight gold, during a press conference made it clear to Brandon Rios, the former WBA world lightweight champion that he must not be overconfident as he has also prepared extremely well and possesses
a technical style of brawling which is not that easy to supersede.
Richard and Brandon are scheduled to take on each other in a 12-round bout which will take place on Saturday April 14, 2012. The ring for the event will be stretched at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and the event
is being promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
The duo will headline the event and for the past few weeks the intensity between the pugilists has heightened substantially which has eventually generated a series of verbal skirmishes.
During a recent press conference at Los Angeles, Abril apologised for his rash behaviour in the previous Miami press conference and explained that he did not lose his cool deliberately rather was provoked by the abusive language used by Brandon.
The Cuban Richard informed the media personnel that it would be an uphill task for Brandon since he is not a rough rookie level pugilist rather possesses a technical stance that will help him retain the gold.
Abril, who has nailed 17 opponents in 20 bouts, commented, “I have a technical style. I like using my distance or depending on what Brandon brings. He is anticipating that he will be champion once again but he better not be too overconfident. If he is he
will go down.”
Brandon, who unfortunately was stripped of his gold before the John Murray title defence bout because of not meeting the weight criteria, adopted the aggressive stance and bashed Abril. Rios commented, “I feel great all said in done April 14 I am going to
get my title back and be the lightweight champion once again. Who is Richard Abril?’ everyone asked. Nobody knew who he was and they still won’t know who he is because April 14 I am getting my title back and moving on to bigger and better things.”
The bout will be televised on HBO and will be co-headlined by the non-title 10-round bout between Mike Alvarado and Mauricio Herrera. The clash between Rios and Abril will be a tooth-and-nail one since Rios is dying to grab the gold which rightfully belonged
to him.
Rios, who has just reached Las Vegas for the epic bout, has been in a total 30 bouts and boasts an intimidating 29-bout long win streak. He has never lost even a single bout and just collected a draw decision against Manuel Perez.
