Richard Berens and Eric Shanteau lead qualifying rounds of their events - 2011 Charlotte UltraSwim
Unattached-ST’s Richard Berens and Eric Shanteau dominated the qualifying rounds of their swimming events on day two of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim, held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club.
The session concluded after the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 100m breast-stroke, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and the 400m Individual Medley (IM).
The session commenced with the Men’s 200m freestyle, where Richard Berens stunned the crowd by occupying the fastest qualification spot. The 23-year-old Berens out-touched his closest rival Domin Meichtry, by only 0.01 seconds and clocked a time of 1:50.48
minutes. Meichtry, who transpired as the second fastest swimmer, clocked a time of 1:50.49 minutes. They were followed by Markus Rogan, who secured the third fastest qualification spot, in a time of 1:50.73 minutes.
In the 100m breast-stroke event, Eric Shanteau proved his eligibility with a timing of 1:1.85 minutes. He was followed by NY Athletic Club’s Mark Gangloff and South Florida-FG’s Vladi Polyakov, who touched the wall for second and third fastest qualification
in 1:02.56 and 1:03.45 minutes, respectively.
Later, Eugene Godsoe displayed a remarkable swim to occupy the top qualification spot in the 100m butterfly. SwimMAC Carolina’s Godsoe, who appeared as the fastest swimmer, touched the wall in 53.50 seconds. He was followed by Ohio State University’s Tim
Phillips, who managed the second fastest spot with a timing of 53.56 seconds. Tyler McGill followed them into the finals as the third fastest sprinter, posting a time of 53.95 seconds.
The last event of the session was the Men’s 400m IM, where Germany’s Yannick Lebherz, cruised his way to the finishing wall as the fastest qualifying swimmer in a time of 4:26.81 minutes. North Baltimore’s Brennan Morris and Poseidon-VA’s William Harris
followed him into the final as the second and third fastest swimmers, with a timing of 4:30.04 and 4:30.08 minutes, respectively.
These swimmers will once again battle each other in the preliminary rounds of their respective categories, where the winners of each event will be awarded for their impressive performances in the event.
