Richard Childress Racing driver Kevin Harvick wins Coca Cola 600 – NASCAR news
Richard Childress Racing driver Kevin Harvick won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in his no. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet Impala on Sunday.
The win earns him the status to be the only driver with three victories in the 2011 season to date. This win marks his 17th career win in 370 races.
Harvick said, “Even though we won, I'm still miserable. In about 30 minutes, I'll be happy, when we drive out of that tunnel and leave the month of May behind.”
Despite starting from a lowly 28th position on the starting grid, Harvick could not challenge for a victory. However, after winning the race, he was too thrilled to feel the happiness.
Harvick added, “We were lucky. I told them at the beginning of this thing that we haven't fixed this thing in two weeks, there's no way we're going to fix it. Nothing against this race track -- I just don't like racing here. It just doesn't feel right. I
griped and griped and griped all freaking day long about how terrible it was. I just have a bad attitude here, so hopefully this helps.”
Harvick’s fortune changed when Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s no. 88 car ran out of fuel just half a mile away from the finish line. In the meanwhile, Greg Biffle went into the pit lane for refuelling.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was expected to break the 104-race winless run, but the fuel shortage added one more race without victory to his account. He later finished seventh in the race.
Earnhardt Jr. said that he would have been pleased to score a victory at CMS. He also added that the fans were expecting him to win but the strategy to save fuel caused a big problem. Dale was disappointed to lose the race, however, his team plans to take
the same car to other races as well.
