Richard Christie and Tanio Barreto move to next round: First round of Super Surf International – Part 12
The fifth Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event, Super Surf International, had gotten off to an amazing start with the round of 96 on Tuesday, May 31st, at Praia da Vila beach in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
The same level of surfing action was delivered to the fans on the second day of the event as well to complementing the first day and lived up to the hype that surrounds a Prime event with a field comprised of talented surfers from all across the globe.
The conditions were not in favour of the surfers, with strong offshore winds accompanying four-to-six foot tides. The talented athletes remained undaunted by the conditions and attempted to come up with their best performance in order to survive the first
round and secure a place in the round of 48.
In the 23rd heat, New Zealand’s Richard Christie managed to prevail over his compatriot, Billy Stairmand, as well as Australia’s Davey Cathels and America’s Chris Ward.
Christie opened his account with 6.50 points off his very first wave. He later followed it up with a really impressive second wave, earning 7.50 from it, to end up with a heat-total of 14.00 points. The scored remained unbeatable and carried him off to a
convincing victory, allowing him to advance to the next round of the competition.
The challenging surfing conditions kept Stairmand from catching a lot of waves. He did, however, manage to catch a couple, earning 5.50 and 3.03 points off them, to grab the second place and extend his life in the competition.
Cathels and Ward rounded out the third and fourth positions, earning 6.50 and 3.97 points respectively. They evidently succumbed to the demanding conditions and now stand eliminated from the event.
In the final heat of round of 96, Brazil’s Tanio Barreto was pitted against New Zealand’s Jay Quinn as well as the two Australians, Matt Wilkinson and Blake Thornton.
The local surfer, Barreto, took the lead early in the contest, locking a wave to earn 5.70 points from it. In the final moments of the heat, he caught another wave and earned himself a score of 6.00 to finish with a two-wave total of 11.70 points.
The rest of the surfers had no intention of letting Barreto walk away with victory without a fight. However their efforts proved to be futile. Quinn managed to get 10.67 off his two waves to land in second place and qualify for the round of 48 along with
Barreto. Wilkinson and Thornton rounded out the bottom two positions with a score of 10.23 and 9.73 respectively. Both of them have been eliminated from the event.
With the 24th heat wrapping up, the first round of the competition concluded. For updates on the second round of Super Surf International, stay tuned to bettor.com.
