Former England international Richard Dawson has been named as Gloucestershire's new spin bowling coach ahead of the 2011 season.
The off spinner will remain on the county's playing staff but has been given the extra responsibility of a coaching role. Dawson will take the ECB Level IV Coaching award this winter and seems destined
for a career in the game after he retires.
"I am excited about this opportunity of coaching the county’s spin bowlers and look forward to the challenge over the next year," he said.
There are a number of aspects to Dawson that make him ideal for this coaching role. The Gloucestershire spin attack should be one of the most solid parts of the team next year.
A fitting appointment
This is a fitting appointment because Dawson is one of the most experienced players in English cricket. He's taken 199 wickets in first-class cricket and has also bowled for England in some of the most
hostile cricket grounds around http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750.
Dawson is now the wrong side of 30-years-old and may be looking at his cricket career after playing. Getting early experience in a coaching role can quickly allow Dawson to determine whether it's something
he wants to do long-term.
Dawson seems well liked and popular at Gloucestershire. This is important because it makes him approachable. It's important for any young player to be able to approach a coach with a problem whether it
relates to cricket or not.
"With the club’s stronger emphasis on producing good young cricketers, and having seen his coaching close up during Academy sessions, Richard is a great acquisition to the coaching staff. His experience
and knowledge at both county and international level will be extremely valuable to our developing players," added executive board member Jack http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Russell-c87177.
Betting advice
Dawson has a first-class average of 44, which is a little too high for a bowler who has played over 100 games. Be wary of backing him to take five-fors but the Gloucestershire slow bowling attack should
now be more efficient and lethal through all four-day and one-day games next year.
