Richard Fahey pens down the future options for Mayson after his astonishing victory in the Darley July Cup
The astounding success of Invincible Spirit’s four-year-old bay colt in the Group 1 Darley July Cup (British Champions Series And Global Sprint Challenge) on 14th July, 2012 at Newmarket over six furlongs, has paved paths for him to hold entries in the upcoming sprint challenges.
The agonising defeats in the two races that preceded the Darley July Cup had shattered the hopes of the connections for any significant successes for the Highfield Farm Llp bred, let alone bagging one of the most influential races by staggering five lengths that too in the field packed with talent of twelve contestants.
Taking down racing legends like the Australian rides Sepoy and Ortensia along with the Irish racing inspiration, Society Rock, has taken the talent benchmark for Mayson to all new heights.
The Richard Fahey trained was guided through the track distance by the highly accomplished rider, Paul Hanagan.
The undisputed leading pair for the race till the first four furlongs was The Cheka who took off from the tenth gate and, Mayson, breaking from the neighbouring stall.
With final two furlongs remaining, the Eve Johnson Houghton trained started fading from the duo leadership and had to settle as the runner-up by a loss of five lengths.
Not only did the Mayleaf foaled win after two miserable losses, rather he won with pride and dignity. Neither was it mere luck that got him to the wire as the undisputed leader - sure turned out to be a thorough treat for the connections with their under charge making comeback with such incredible zest.
"Everything was right on the day. He travelled strongly, they left him alone and two down I thought he'd pick up and they won't catch him," Fahey told At The Races.
"It was a massive performance. All you can do is beat them and in this case he's beaten them well.
"He's in at York, he's in the Haydock race and he'll be put in the French race. They are targets, but we'll definitely go to Longchamp at the end of the season. That's a target we want to go to."
The revitalised trainer has not ignored the other substantial chances in the wake of taking his charge to the Longchamp challenge in October. He has under serious consideration the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York, the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock.
