Richard Finch wins, Martin Kaymer eliminated from the Volvo World Match Play Championship
Richard Finch defeated Martin Kaymer in the second round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, the biggest upset of the event so far.
Finch, the 34-year-old English professional golf player, displayed an amazing performance on Friday, at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
He competed well throughout the day and gave a tough time to the world number nine and famous German player, Kaymer.
Finch started the round at par, and took a lead on the second hole, as Kaymer shot a bogey. Then on the fifth hole, he recorded his first birdie.
He was playing perfectly and appeared to be fully fit. He delivered his best and avoided making over-par scores. He secured his lead from the 9th hole, as he took benefit from Kaymer's average performance.
Finch was on the top of leaderboard, for having six points and for saving many bogeys on Friday. He won the round by a one-point lead over Kaymer.
"This is a pleasant surprise as I didn't expect to beat Martin," Finch said. "The funny thing is that I almost felt like giving him that putt at the last. It was a good game, and there was never really much in it".
Kaymer also played an impressive game, but was unable to meet the enormous birdie stroking from Finch. Kaymer recorded the first point on the 4th hole.
Then he earned three more consecutive points from 6th to 8th hole. After the 8th hole, he lost his focus and was able to add another point on the 12th.
A devastating bogey on the 14th and double-bogey on the 18th became the reason for his defeat. Previously in the first round, he was also defeated by Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
Rafael and Finch are moving ahead and will face tough rivals in the third round. However, Kaymer has been eliminated for losing twice. He will now be heading back to his home.
The 2012 PGA Championship winner is famous in Spain. He is also the most competent player in the field. The absence of the 10-time European Tour winner will be making the tournament less competitive and less appealing.
