Richard Gasquet blows away Thomaz Bellucci to clear the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
No trouble for the world number 13, Richard Gasquet of France, in the second round of Rogers Cup, as he outplayed the unseeded Brazilian, Thomaz Bellucci, on Wednesday afternoon.
Seeded at number 10 in the tournament, Gasquet overwhelmed his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, to make it to the round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event, being played at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
The Brazilian has been in a magnificent from this season but failed to pose any serious resistance against the belligerence of the 10th seed Gasquet. The Frenchman registered his second victory against Bellucci in the running season, with the previous one being at Roland Garros this year, when Gasquet ousted the Brazilian 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to make it to the round of 16. Gasquet’s 28th victory of current year extended his head-to-head lead against Bellucci to 2-0.
Bellucci had three chances to crack in a break to the French serve but squandered away all of them to finish the contest on the losing end. Gasquet’s 52 per cent precise serve earned him 22 out of 27 first serve points but his opponent bettered him by bagging 23 points to lose the game.
Gasquet was off to a ballistic start in the opening set and straight away launched a series of forays upon his opponent to bring him under pressure early in the game. The French contestant nailed two consecutive serve breaks in the opener to rocket away to 5-0 lead with Bellucci struggling to get his eye in the game. The Brazilian sprayed a number of errant strokes all over the court and frittered away two break opportunities before submitting the first set to Gasquet at 1-6.
The French carried on with his winning impetus in the next set as well and stung another early serve break to lead 3-1. He secured 12 out of 15 first serve points in the second set and held his lead till the conclusion of the matchup. Bellucci failed to cash in the vital break chance he had in the fifth game and eventually succumbed to Gasquet in the second set at 4-6, letting him through to the third round of the tournament.
Gasquet will take on the world number 10, Nicolas Almagro of Spain, in his next encounter for a place in the quarter-finals of Rogers Cup. Almagro stood victorious against Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(5), in the second round of the tournament.
