Richard Gasquet crushes Paolo Lorenzi to reach quarters – Estoril Open 2012
Second seed, Richard Gasquet, slaughtered the Italian star, Paolo Lorenzi, with double breadsticks at the Estoril Open 2012 on Wednesday. He spectacularly jolted down a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the 30-year-old to cruise into the final eight at the Estoril
Court Central in Portugal.
The French tennis star, Gasquet, devastated his Italian opponent in straight sets in 66 minutes. The contestants previously met each other at the Sony Ericsson Open last season and after pocketing this match. Gasquet improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the FedEx
ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the world number 82.
Gasquet high-spiritedly entered this ATP World Tour 250 series event and held his opening serve with conviction. After Lorenzi held his serve in the second game, the French unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and wiped out the following five games in a row.
He cashed in both break chances and begged the first breadstick in almost half an hour.
Ranked 18th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gasquet kept momentum running into the follow-up set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to get the upper hand. After Lorenzi held his serve in the third game, the
French re-ignited his spark again and pocketed the breadstick.
This success marked Gasquet’s first clay court win of the season. He clobbered a lower first serve share of 54 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 61 per cent but superbly marked 19 out of 22 points on it. The French brushed off the lone breakpoint he faced
and converted five out of six break opportunities to earn the fame.
Next in queue for Gasquet is the Spanish qualifier, Daniel Munoz-De La Nava, who shocked eight seeded Flavio Cipolla in straight sets to set-up this clash. The Spaniard lost his serve four times but capitalised on six out of 22 break opportunities to manipulate
a 6-4, 6-4 success in almost two hours.
The third seed, Stanislas Wawrinka, also stole the show later that day. The Swiss crippled Spain’s Ivan Navarro with a breadstick to advance at this event. He smashed six aces and ruled throughout this one hour and 23-minute battle.
