Richard Gasquet defeats Blaz Kavcic in the second round of the Barcelona Open
French tennis player Richard Gasquet emerged victorious at the second round of this year’s Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating his second round opponent Blaz Kavcic in three lopsided sets at the tournament. Gasquet undid his Slovakian opponent is just over one hour and fifty-seven minutes, setting up a winning score-line of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
It was not a difficult match for the World Number 17, who has won a total of six Association of Tennis Professionals events [ATP] so far in his career. He began the match extremely well, and won 71 per cent of his first serve points to take a significant lead. The player faced four break points, and was able to defend himself against three. He was only broken once during the set, but successfully converted two of three break points against Kavcic. The player went on to take an impressive 60 per cent of the points in the match, taking a good 6-3 lead in the match.
However, the French pro suffered a mid-match lapse in the second set, and allowed himself to be broken twice. He scored one ace, while his opponent managed two despite committing one double fault. Blaz Kavcic went on to be broken just once, and scored three points more than Gasquet in this set. This was enough to push him to a 6-4 win, after taking 53 per cent of the total points. At this point, the score-line was 6-3, 4-6 to Richard Gasquet.
Gasquet regained control of the match in this set, and seemed determined to take revenge on Kavcic for the second set. The French Pro did not commit any double faults, and scored a magnificent 100 per cent of his first serve points. The player was not broken even once, although he managed to break Kavcic twice out of six opportunities. The match ended when Gasquet took an impressive 62 per cent of the points in the third set to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The player will compete against compatriot and seventh seed Gael Monfils in the third round of the clay tournament.
