Richard Gasquet dismisses Marco Chiudinelli in the second round – Swiss Indoors Basel 2012
Third seed, Richard Gasquet of France, scored a one sided win against Swiss wild card entrant, Marco Chiudinelli, in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel.
The French contestant dropped just five games in the entire match, winning it in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The encounter lasted for just one hour and five minutes.
Gasquet came firing in the contest, as he broke his Swiss rival in the second and fourth game, holding his entire serves between them and winning five in a row to grab a 5-0 lead. Chiudinelli, who had earned an upset win over Guillermo
Garcia-Lopez the previous day, looked helpless against the Frenchman. However, he managed to avoid more embarrassment, as he held his serve in the sixth game to open his account and reduce the trail to 1-5. Gasquet did not waste any time to close it, triumphing
6-1.
The French number two banged in a single ace and did not make any double fault, keeping his first serve percentage at 68. The right-hander was near error free on his first deliveries, as he lost only one point on them, winning
12 of the 13. The 26-year-old stood strong on his second deliveries and returns, clinching four of the six and five of the nine points on them respectively.
Gasquet struck in the very first game of the second set and consolidated on it to attain a 2-0 lead. It was far more competitive than the opener, as both players held their serves throughout the remaining part. Though, it meant
that Chiudinelli did not get a chance to bounce back, losing it 4-6.
Currently ranked 13th in the world, Gasquet did a superb job on his serves in the second set, as he bombarded seven aces and 70 percent of the first deliveries on Chiudinelli. This time, the French player’s first serve
conversion rate was even better than the opener, as he won all the 16 points on them. Gasquet utilised the only break opportunity he created in the second set.
The Frenchman will play the sixth seed, Mikhail Youzhny, or Matthew Ebden in the quarter-finals.
