Richard Gasquet ends Janko Tipsarevic’s voyage in the third round – Australian Open 2012
Sheer disappointment for the tennis fans, as the world number nine, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, suffered a humiliating straight sets defeat at the hands of the 17th seed French, Richard Gasquet, in the third round of
the Grand Slam Down Under. He hung in the contest for 97 minutes before the world number 18, Gasquet, took the better of him to register an emphatic victory on Saturday afternoon.
The crowd at the Margaret Court Arena came to witness the hot favourite ninth seed to crack some fireworks with his racquet but totally went the other way round. Tipsarevic appeared struggling to get his strokes right throughout
the matchup and was led down by his error-ridden game play. He coughed 33 unforced errors in the contest and registered just one break point in the entire match, whilst Gasquet nailed six serve breaks en route to victory.
The 17th seed banged in six aces and secured 29 out of 41 first serve points to get the better of the world number nine. His forehand worked perfectly for him and he was very aggressive in his approach in the contest.
Gasquet launched frequent forays to the net and converted 17 out of 20 net points to assert his authority in the competition.
Tipsarevic was off to a steady start in the first set and held his serve in the opening two games before dropping it in the sixth game to trail 2-4. Gasquet closed out the opener at 6-3 and went on to with his momentum to claim
the following set with the same score line. Tipsarevic was completely overwhelmed in the third set dropped his serve twice to trail 0-4. He made a last attempt to make comeback in the match with his only break point conversion in the fifth game but a cracking
serve break in the very next game closed out the contest for Gasquet with a breadstick at 6-1.
A tougher challenge waits Gasquet in the fourth round of the tournament; where he will go one-on-one against the world number five, David Ferrer, for a place in the quarter-finals. The fifth seed Spaniard registered a straight
sets victory, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1, against the 27th seed argentine, Juan Ignacio Chela, in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
