14th seeded French, Richard Gasquet gave a straight sets upset to the American number one, John Isner, 7-6(3), 6-3, in the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup, in Toronto, Canada on Saturday.
In a post match press conference, Gasquet said, “The key of the match was to return well, and I did it. I tried to return all the time to make him play. Then I like to defend. But of course, I had to do a big tie-break, and
I did it. I played incredible in the tiebreak and then I felt well.”
He further added, “It's great to be in another final this season. I felt good on the court and played well. I'm in good form and looking forward to going one more step.”
The French professional competed against Isner for the third time. The matched started off at steady pace from both ends, with each player holding their initial serves to keep the score board ticking. With no break points
registered from either side, the scores eventually got levelled at 4-4 in the opener, with the Frenchman pressing hard to take the upper hand. Gasquet eventually clinched the lead but the scores again equalized to 6-6 to enforce a tie-break into play. The
Frenchman rallied past Isner in the tie-breaker round to get one up in the contest and carried on his momentum in the second set to take the lead of 4-2. He carried on hitting winners at will to seal victory at 6-3.
Gasquet had a 76 percent serve rate in the match. The 26-year-old secured a hand full of aces, and won 20 percent of the breakpoints in the match. The 6ft-9in tall American had a 68 percent serve rate than his rival but he
lost some crucial points in the match to finish on the losing side in the end.
