Richard Green wins Portugal Masters 2010
The Portugal Masters 2010 came to an end on 17th October with Australia’s Richard Green clinching the title at the Victoria golf course in Vilamoura. The third and last round witnessed Green filling a 7 stroke shortfall to power through to claim
the title.
The left handed golfer ended the match after carding a total score of 65 with a 7 under Par. After an error-strewn last round by leader Pablo Martin from Spain, Green made a powerful comeback into the game. Martin was left behind by the 39-year-old Green
in the race for his third European title.
The first and second rounds at the Portugal Open had Pablo Martin leading the rounds with 4 strokes over the chasers. The last and final round of the championship had Martin leading the golfers with 4 strokes even after 5 holes.
Fate seemed to favour Martin till the 6th hole of the final round. However, the disintegration for the Spaniard came to the limelight when he double bogeyed at the 7th hole.
Everything was going good until the part where he faced the water bunker. The Spanish golfer sent his ball into the water after which, his game changed paces with the rest of the competition. His clash with the bunker led Martin to trickle down the leader
board in an unbelievably fast mode and he finished with a tie. Martin’s game ended with him standing on the 6th place with a 75.
Other than Martin and Green rushing towards the cup, Italy’s Francesco Molinari was also seen at the arena. The Molinari, who is a former Ryder Cup player, ended his game with a 62. His recent score at the Portugal Open is the second one for this week. The
27-year-old ended his game with Robert Karlsson, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Joost Luiten all tied at the second place. The Swede, Spaniard and Dutchman thus carded scores of 67, 68 and a 69 to stand with the Italian.
Coming back to the winner of the competition, Green refused to falter at any point in time of the final round. The Australian slipped a little at the last three holes of the tournament but even that failed to shake him. He maintained his cool and charged
ahead in the competition to card 11 birdies in total in the last round of the event.
Green collected $689,000 for winning the Portugal Masters where he opined that he had targeted a 64. He said it felt strange, but the ending was good enough.
