Richard Hannon seeking success in Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot
Richard Hannon has a very strong representation in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, being held at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, June 19th. The veteran trainer has won this race three times and with four high status entries this year, he has a great chance
of adding another win to his tally.
Rock City earned Hannon the first Coventry Stakes triumph back in 1989. After a gap of almost two decades, the experienced handler’s good days returned, when Canford Cliffs and Strong Suit respectively won the event for him in 2009 and 2010.
Hannon has sent four runners, Sir Prancealot, The Taj, Olympic Glory and Master Of War, in this year’s meeting, hoping for his fourth victory in the big event.
"This has been a lucky race for us, and, while we have no Canford Cliffs this year, we run four very good horses. It was a toss of coin as to whether we ran Sir Prancealot here or waited for the Norfolk, but Andrew (Tinkler, owner) was keen to go on the
first day and that is fine by me,” the trainer told www.richardhannonracing.tv.
He added: “Some people seem to think that he was a bit flattered by his National Stakes victory at Sandown, but, believe me, he is a serious horse. He has unbelievable speed, but he is by Tamayuz, so we know that he is not just a whizz-bang sprinter.”
Without a doubt, Sir Prancealot is Hannon’s main hope this year. The two-year-old has been maintaining the highest standards since the start of his career.
After sealing an emphatic win at Bath in mid May, the bay colt continued his good work and crushed his rivals at Sandown at the end of last month.
Aidan O´Brien has also won this race three times and he is being strongly represented once again. However, J. S. Bolger’s 2-year-old, Dawn Approach, will the one to watch out for.
New Approach’s son is coming into this race after clinching three consecutive wins earlier this season. After making a great impression at Curragh, the dashing colt grabbed two back-to-back wins at Naas a few weeks ago.
In pursue of a cash prize worth £48,204, twenty three quality runners are going to show their magic in the 6f event, getting underway at 16:25 (GMT).
