Richard Hannon surprised by Frankel’s inclusion in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, Sir Henry Cecil praises his unbeaten colt
Sir Henry Cecil trained Frankel pleased his connections by putting an extra bit into his workouts on July 19th morning. The unbeaten colt braces himself for a mouthwatering clash with the Queen Anne Stakes winner, Canford Cliffs, at Glorious Goodwood in
the Group 1, £300,000 QIPCO Sussex Stakes.
The son of Galileo had to put up an impressive show in the training sessions this week because it will be the first time in his two-year unbeaten career that he would face a unit of older horses.
Despite the age threat, Sir Henry Cecil and jockey Tom Queally are hopeful that the colt will expand his unbeaten streak even after the race.
Both of them were pleased with his efforts as on 19 July, Frankel accompanied by his stablemate, Bullet Train, worked over a mile.
At the Limekilns, Frankel worked a bullet, clearing his stablemate off 10 lengths which was the decisive factor contributing to his top form, his speed.
Frankel looked fast in the work outs and in top form, certainly ready to take Canford Cliffs.
The pre-race hype is taking a new turn everyday but on top of it winning matters to both horses and their connections.
Canford Cliffs' trainer, Richard Hannon, was surprised after Frankel’s inclusion in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes. Hannon was of the view that, seeing Frankel run in the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal Ascot over a distance of seven furlongs, his trainer would
prefer a seven furlong race for him rather than a mile.
At the other end of the spectrum, Sir Henry Cecil is involved in his colts growing stature day by day. He was equally impressed with the workout and now he is aiming for another two days of similar workout sessions before the race.
Jockey Tom Queally was impressed as well. He said that Frankel gave him a good feeling during the workout, showed nice pace and settled beautifully into the rhythm.
It is going to be a mouthwatering clash as the hype becomes enormous, which is valued by the reputation of these two horses.
Canford Cliffs' last race was also at the Royal Ascot where he won the Queen Anne Stakes, defeating the mighty Goldikova by a single length, the first upset of the opening race day car at the Ascot.
Frankel took the field apart in the Royal Ascot as well when he took care of Zoffany, who never quite got to the winner, in the St James’s Palace Stakes.
Punters are oblivious on how to rate the two before the race.
At first they were paired-joint favourites at 11 to 10, but now as Frankel appears to extend his unbeaten record to eight, he has been given the odds of 4 to 5 favourite while Canford Cliffs sent at 11 to 8.
