HANNON TO GET REWARD IN SUPER SPRINT:

The big race of the day at Newbury on Saturday is the Weatherbys Super Sprint at 3.20pm where a field of 25 juveniles are set to line up. Trainer Richard Hannon has a phenomenal record in this event, having captured the prize on four of the last seven runnings. Clearly, he is trying his utmost to gain another success as he saddles no less than six of the contenders, and Reckless Reward looks the most likely candidate to deliver the trophy in his direction. This son of Choisir completely lost his action at the halfway mark of a Salisbury maiden on his debut. Fancied to make a winning debut that day, he did remarkably well under the circumstances to finish sixth, behind the impressive Dinkum Diamond.
Reckless Reward runs for glory
With that experience behind him, he contested a maiden event at Lingfield a fortnight later where he showed his true talent. Having been up with the pace from the start, he took up the running a furlong from home and quickened right away to beat Stunning In Purple by just over four lengths. There were question marks over the quality of opposition that day but he could hardly have been more impressive.
Any lingering doubts over his ability were well and truly quashed on his final start, which came in the Group Two Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Having led early on, he was outpaced two furlongs out and then stayed on well in the closing stages to finish second to Approve. That performance is better than anything his opponents have achieved to date and he goes into this race as a worthy favourite.
Temple Meads is the dark horse
The dark horse of the race is Temple Meads, trained by Ed McMahon with Richard Mullen set to take the ride. He has only had the one race to date where he contested a very good maiden at Newmarket back in May. In the build up to the race, he attracted a significant amount of support in the betting, suggesting he had put in some good work on the gallops. His supporters were not to be disappointed either as once he took up the running a furlong out, he ran on well to beat the Aidan O’Brien trained Oracle by a length and a half. He is likely to have improved considerably for that run and could be a danger here.
Others worth a mention include the Tom Dascombe-trained Ballista. This Majestic Missile colt made a successful debut when contesting a Haydock maiden back in May, beating Royal Exchange by a neck. His only subsequent run is best forgotten as he was forced to make the running, when finishing third of four behind Crown Prosecutor at Salisbury. There was no pace in that contest and he will certainly get a strongly run race here. It is also worth noting that the trainer has a decent record at this track, recording 10 victories in recent seasons.
Smart fields two horses
Bryan Smart’s two-year-olds are always worth a second look and he has two representatives here of which Boundless Spirit is the most fancied. He put in a good performance on his penultimate outing at Beverley, where he made all the running to beat Chiswick Bey by a length. He then took his chance in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, where a good show was expected. Having led early in the race it was disappointing to see him fold rather tamely at the furlong marker, eventually finishing well-beaten. He is surely better than he looked there and with the stable in such good form at present, he could at least challenge for a place.
