Richard Hughes – Still setting high standards as a jockey
Richard Hughes has been serving as a flat jockey since the nineties and his performances have been extremely good over the years. He has enjoyed a very good time in 2012 and even the younger jockeys have struggled to match him on numerous occasions.
The Irish runner is quite tall for a flat jockey and things were not easy for him right from the start of his career. Many critics would have doubted his ability, but he proved them wrong and maintained very good standards throughout his career. He always
had to work hard in order to keep his weight on the lower side, as his height meant that he was heavier than his rivals.
However, the veteran jockey has trained hard in order to stay fit. In addition to that, he has enjoyed a lot of success throughout his career and everyone considers him to be one of the best riders at present.
After Hughes’ strong showings in the 2012 season, Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams commented: “Hughes is in flying form and it seems like an age since we laid a bet on his main rival for the title. It is one-way traffic.”
He managed to win the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes (British Champions Series) (Group 1) (Fillies & Mares) with John Gosden’s runner, The Fugue, this year. The young filly had struggled to meet the expectations of her team in her previous couple of outings
and it was important for her to shine in the important event.
However, she was ridden by Hughes in the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes and he guided her to the top of the table with ease. After winning, he stated, “John told me to have it in my mind that she had had a very hard race in the Oaks and a very hard race
at Ascot and she didn't want another hard race today. I managed to win without giving her a belt.”
This was not the first time when the experienced jockey took the top spot in his career. He has won numerous other Group-1 events and still has the potential to make a strong impression in the future events. However, he will need to continue working hard,
just like he has been doing over the past decade and a half.
