Richard Hughes fighting for the jockeys’ championships
Richard Hughes is going to have to step up his fight for the jockey’s championships after Paul Hanagan took two wins at Wolverhampton on Monday, 1 November, bringing his lead to five wins ahead of Hughes.
"Hughsie has done me about three times by a short head in the last week so I owed him one!" said Hanagan to
At The Races.
Hanagan rode Insolenceofoffice to the win in the Maiden Stakes at 2-3 odds, with Hughes following, crossing the line in third with Lady Mango at 9-2. Hanagan also went on to ride Blue Moon to another win
ahead of Hughes later the same day.
"It was a bit tough, she never really travelled for me, but I rode her last time and she's very tough and game."
Hughes has suggested he might be skipping the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday at Churchill Downs, where he was set to rider Paco Boy in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, in order to focus on the jockeys’ championships.
Hughes has ridden 15 winners in less than two weeks, quickly closing Hanagan’s lead of 13 down to three before the latter’s double on Monday, 1 November.
Hughes had originally planned to end his British season Thursday before leaving for the Cup.
"[Staying in Britain] is a possibility. We'll wait and see for a day or two and see how things are then before making a decision about whether to stay here for the weekend."
Paco Boy’s trainer Richard Hannon has already said that the jockeys’ championships is more important to Hughes than the Breeders’ Cup. He named Ryan Moore as the replacement if Hughes decides to stay in
Britain.
"As I've said, I shall keep my options open for now," said Hughes. "As of now, I'm really enjoying the race, but we'll see where we stand in a couple of days."
