Richard Kahui out for the season – Rugby News Update
Richard Kahui, the 26-year-old All Blacks’ Centre, is set to miss the remaining season due to a shoulder injury, which also means that he will miss out on Ireland's visit.
The Irish rugby team is scheduled to tour New Zealand for a series, with the All Blacks set to announce a 35-man squad by Monday, which will then be reduced to 30 on June 3, before the first test starts in Auckland on June 9.
Kahui has cemented a place in the New Zealand team effortlessly, playing in the centre of midfield, while showing his versatility on the wing. However, it was announced that the centre suffered a dislocated shoulder in their Super Rugby match against the
Reds, which they lost 42-27. The injury was confirmed by coach Dave Rennie.
"We'll get the shoulder scanned tomorrow, but the likelihood is it's the end of his season from a Super Rugby viewpoint," said coach Dave Rennie. "Richard had a big impact in the time he was on the field. I feel for him because he's a bloody top man, a big
part of our leadership group and obviously the All Blacks were pretty keen on him playing there.”
Kahui made his All Blacks debut against England at Christchurch on June 21, 2008, at outside-centre, in a 44-12 win. He currently plays for the Waikato Chiefs in the Super 14 but he burst on the scene with the Highlanders in 2006. He impressed for the Highlanders
in the New Zealand Cup, being voted the player of the tournament and scoring the most tries in the following season. His work was going to bring him an international debut, which did happen in 2008.
He has had problems with his injury in the past, particularly with his shoulder. His 2010 season was cut short because of a disrupted shoulder, which did not let him start the 2011 Super Rugby campaign.
He is a strong person and Rennie reiterated that when he said, "It's disappointing for him, but knowing him he'll still have a bit to say about what goes on from here in regard to what we do on the track and helping out the young fellas."
