Richard Schaefer: Khan vs. Mayweather can happen in 2013 – Boxing News
Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, believes that Amir Khan must make sure he is good enough to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. In his recent media interaction while announcing a deal with BoxNation to televise two bouts from Golden Boy Promotions
every month, Richard said that Khan must become ‘more clinical’ and must tune his ‘warrior spirit’ if he wants to face Mayweather. The deal between Golden Boy Promotions and BoxNation will start with the Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto bout.
On the other hand, Khan’s US promoter Oscar De La Hoya has already established the fact that the British-Pakistani boxer is good enough to face Mayweather. According to Oscar, Khan has all the skills and knacks to knockout Mayweather.
According to Richard, “It is still a dangerous fight for Amir, who insisted on and fought for the rematch. He has the chance to prove that he has the skills to outbox the guy who took the IBF and WBA light-welterweight belts.”
In other words, Richard wants the former unified IBF and WBA super welterweight champion to win the fight against Peterson and then think about taking on Mayweather. Of course, Lamont Peterson is nowhere close to what Mayweather is, and if Khan cannot defeat
Peterson then definitely he is not good enough to stand face to face with Mayweather.
It should be noted here that Khan has been insisting on a match with Mayweather since last year. He wanted to face Mayweather this year in May, however after his defeat to Peterson, plans for Khan changed. In fact, just two months earlier Khan was planning
to move up in weight to challenge Mayweather, just when his rematch with Lamont Peterson came in the scene. If Khan had not received the rematch, he would have been preparing to face Mayweather right now.
In a nutshell, Khan’s rematch with Peterson is not just to get his titles back, but it is the ground-setter for his future matches. He cannot afford to lose to Peterson again. If he does, his career will go down the drain, which he would not want to happen.
