Richard Schaefer: We'll follow where the athletic commission stands – Boxing News
Even though disheartened, Amir Khan and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions have vowed to follow the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s rulings. Lamont Peterson was tested positive for synthetic testosterone earlier this week.
Urine sample were taken from the IBF and WBA super lightweight champion during the month of March. The sample was divided into two parts ‘A’ and ‘B’. The first test result had come earlier being positive but the second part’s result was awaited. The Nevada
State Athletic Commission and Golden Boy Promotions was notified of the results yesterday when both the parts showed positive results. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association had conducted the tests and notified both the parties later on.
According to Peterson’s lawyer Jeff Fried, Peterson underwent treatments during which he was prescribed to take the drug carrying supplements. Fried wrote a letter to Kizer, executive director of Nevada State Athletic Commission, explaining that Peterson
took the substance for therapeutic reasons.
Schaefer and Amir Khan, the former unified IBF and WBA super lightweight champion, are highly disappointed with the scenario. Schaefer said that if Peterson is unable to compete, the ‘entire fight card will be scrapped’.
However, keeping no doubts about it, Schaefer said, “We'll follow where the athletic commission stands.”
On the other hand, Amir Khan’s father, Shah said that Khan’s camp will wait for the final ruling from the Nevada commission as to whether Peterson will participate in the fight or not. He further said, “If [Peterson] used that before the first fight, it
should be ruled a no-contest.”
For now, both parties have to wait for the commission’s final decision. If Peterson is not allowed to participate, unfortunately Khan will have to find another opponent or not fight at all. Khan has been eager and excited for the match. He visited WBO welterweight
champion Manny Pacquiao’s training camp in Baguio City to train with the Filipino. He had even set up a media campaign to build up his brand. However, with the recent unfolding, it seems like Khan has to give up on his dream of getting his titles back. If
the rematch does not happen, Khan’s dream will remain in darkness once again.
