Richard Schaefer admits Khan let himself open to Garcia – Boxing News
According to CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer, Amir Khan let himself open for Danny Garcia to deliver a devastating punch on his neck. However, Schaefer believes Khan’s defeat to Danny Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino will
not affect his career.
“He left himself open and that one punch changed the fight but I can tell you that one punch did not change and will not change Amir Khan's career,” said Richard, who believes Khan can still go head to head with some of the world’s most explosive fighters.
He added, “It's one of those situations where you have to take a couple of steps back and then one forward.”
When asked about Khan’s potential fight against Mayweather, Schaefer answered, “Right now it would obviously not make sense to talk about the Mayweather fight, but can I still see a potential Mayweather fight? Absolutely.”
According to Schaefer, Khan’s match against Mayweather would be exciting. While most analysts believe Khan’s dreams of fighting Mayweather have shattered, Schaefer believes Khan is still a potential fighter who can take on Mayweather.
Nevertheless, Richard Schaefer did admit that a fight with Mayweather is far away for Khan now but not impossible. Schaefer has faith in Khan, and he believes the Bolton proud will make a comeback with a couple of wins to make his way to Mayweather.
Khan lost his WBA light welterweight title to Danny Garcia past Saturday. The unbeaten American unified three titles; the WBA title from Khan, his own WBC light welterweight title and the vacant Ring Magazine title.
For now, Khan faces the danger of being called ‘overrated’ by most critics and analysts. This was Khan’s first ever fight against a strong opponent, and he lost. Previously, Khan has taken on opponents who were of smaller stature than his. Garcia, however,
is a sound fighter who is known for his strength and speed.
After the fight, Khan did admit the fact that he made the mistake of taking Garcia’s strength too easy. Just one punch on his neck and Khan was down on the canvas. Since then, the Briton was staggering in the ring.
