Richard Schaefer believes Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Robert Guerrero is possible – Boxing News
Chief Executive of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer believes the ‘interest is there’ in a possible fight between Robert Guerrero and WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr. Guerrero, who recently defeated Andre Berto via unanimous decision, called out Floyd Mayweather Jr.
While most analysts believe Guerrero is not yet polished enough to face Mayweather, Schaefer has already indicated towards the fight.
“It’s a process, one that has begun … I have a site and date in mind, but those conversations are best served now to take place behind closed doors,” said Schaefer.
However, Schaefer has denied commenting on the fight.
Guerrero currently stands with 31 wins and 1 loss in portfolio, while Mayweather stands with 45 wins and 0 losses. Mayweather is widely regarded as the best fighter out there today but his recent fight against Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto clearly showed signs of aging. Mayweather was slow and could not defend himself good enough against Cotto. It was the very first time Mayweather’s nose bled in the ring.
Mayweather is being eyed by Filipino rival Manny Pacquiao for a possible super-fight, but there are rarely any chances for the fight happening. Pacquiao has already given Mayweather an ultimatum of 2013. According to Pacquiao, if the fight does not happen by the end of 2013, it will never happen.
It should be noted here that a super-fight between the two is being awaited by fans. For over two years, talks between both the camps have been taking place but none of the side has come to a conclusion.
Earlier this year, Mayweather and Pacquiao were in direct contact with each other, trying to sort out their difference to make the fight happen. However, unfortunately nothing happened and Mayweather went on to Cotto while Pacquiao faced American unbeaten fight Timothy Bradley.
It has been more than five months Mayweather has not stepped in the ring and he has no plans of doing it anytime soon. As Schaefer has already revealed Guerrero vs. Mayweather is possible next year, which means the unbeaten American will face ‘The Ghost’ in the coming year, probably in exchange for a fight against Pacquiao.
