Richard Schaefer claims Ortiz did not surrender against Lopez – Boxing News
After suffering two fractures in his lower jaw, Victor Ortiz did not answer the bell for the 10th round against Josesito Lopez. Most critics and analysts believed that Ortiz gave up, just like he did back in 2009 against Marcos Maidana. However,
coming to the rescue, Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, claims Ortiz did not give up, instead he was not in the state to continue any further.
Richard said, “"A lot of people felt that, 'Oh, there he goes again, the quitter,' but that is not a fair assessment. People who saw that fight know Ortiz is one of the most entertaining fighters in the world. He comes to fight. It was a terrific fight;
it was back and forth, and Victor was ahead on the scorecards. But with the broken jaw — and it was bleeding — there's no way he could continue. And those who say, well (Muhammad) Ali (fought with a broken jaw against Ken Norton in 1973), it was different
times, different circumstances. I talked to the ringside doctor after the fight, and he was telling me it was very severe, internal bleeding, and he said it's very dangerous, that Victor could bleed out.”
Schaefer sounded furious and he lashed out on the naysayers. According to Schaefer, all those people who say that death in the ring is an honour are just idiots. Schaefer added that every boxer out there is an athlete and not a warrior, and they compete
in the sport to win or lose and not to die or survive.
While most analysts reported Ortiz as the fighter who backs off usually, Schaefer believes Ortiz retains his stint and that he will be put against bigger fighters next. Richard also revealed that he spoke to Ortiz’s doctors at the ringside and they told
him that the fracture was severe and the pugilist could have bled out.
Ortiz went through an immediate surgery after the fight, which went successful, and the pugilist and now recovering. Before the 10th round, Ortiz told his corner that he is unable to close his jaw. When checked, they found the jaw was severely
hurt.
