Richard Schaefer confirms Bob Arum does not want Pacquiao vs. Mayweather – Boxing news
The chief of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, has confirmed a super-fight between eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, and five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, is not going to happen on May 5 due to Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum,
as Schaefer stated Arum wants Pacquiao to fight Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth fight.
“We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time,” Schaefer told ESPN.com.
Pacquiao, who is the current World Boxing Organisation World Welterweight Champion (Super Champion), last weekend, secured a 12-round controversial majority decision over Marquez in their highly anticipated trilogy bout at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao and Marquez’s first fight in 2004 ended up in a controversial draw and their second fight which came four years late in 2008 also saw a similar ending, as Pacquiao was awarded a split decision over the Mexican.
Therefore, their trilogy bout was set up in order to decide who the real winner among them is but since both fighters were once again very close Arum is now looking for a fourth fight between the two.
Mayweather’s camp not too long ago revealed that the undefeated American legend has decided to fight again on May 5 and they wanted a super fight with Pacquiao this time.
However, Schaefer believes now Mayweather will have to look for someone else out there instead of Pacquiao.
“The truth of the matter is that we received this afternoon an email from retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, who has informed us that Top Rank is pursuing a rematch with Marquez and, therefore, is not interested in immediate talks for a possible Mayweather-Pacquiao
fight,” Schaefer said. “Therefore, Floyd Mayweather will have no other choice than to move on and identify and lock in another opponent for his ring return on May 5.”
Marquez and Pacquiao both have always put on a great show for the audience yet one of the most eagerly awaited bouts is Mayweather-Pacquiao because they both stand next to each other in the pound-for-pound rankings and people want to see who is the best
pound-for-pound boxer is.
