Richard Schaefer reckons there is no need for Amir Khan-Manny Pacquiao fight – Boxing news
The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer reckons there is no need for a mega clash between the eight-division World Champion and the WBO Welterweight World Champion (Super Champion), Manny Pacquiao and the new unified WBA and IBF World Light Welterweight
Champion, Amir Khan.
Amir Khan, who is widely known as King Khan, recently stopped the former five-time world champion Zab Judah in the fifth round to claim the IBF title on July 23, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
It was a very impressive performance from Khan as he dominated the fight from the very first round and a lot of people now wonder how much explosive the Khan vs. Pacquiao bout will be.
However, Schaefer believes it is not the time for Amir Khan to set up a clash with Manny Pacquiao as he knows they are both trained by Freddie Roach and are also good friends.
The Bolton’s finest pugilist Khan even sparred with the Fighting Pride of Philippines, Pacquiao, ahead of his bout with the American boxer Judah.
Therefore, Schaefer thinks it would put both boxers in an awkward situation. Schaefer admitted the Khan-Pacquiao fight will be a big one but on the same note, he stated when Amir has so many other options why should he go for Pacquiao at this point.
“I can appreciate how close Freddie is to both and how both of the fighters are close to Freddie, Schaefer said. It would put Amir in a terrible situation, it would Pacquiao in a terrible situation. So why push that if there are so many other attractive
options out there for either one of those fighters? So there's no need for that fight to happen right now because there are plenty of other options out there,” said Schaefer.
Schaefer in the meanwhile mentioned the five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, who is being looked upon by Roach and Khan. Schaefer remarked Khan should take one Mayweather as it would also be one of the bigger bouts.
“I think Mayweather and Amir Khan is as interesting, as exciting, or Amir against the winner of Mayweather-(Victor) Ortiz because Ortiz might pull it off (in their fight Sept. 17),” Schaefer added.
